Hi we have been flying into murcia for the last couple of years twice a year. We always hire a car booked on the uk and always end up paying more for insurance even though in uk they tell you this won t happen, any tips on what to do so you know what you are paying up front

Thanks

Deboragh

If you take out excess cover (Car Hire Excess Insurance) in the UK (an annual one is better value if you hire two or three times a year) then there's no need to take out the extra insurance they try to foist on you at the rental desk. Bear in mind, though, that even with the excess cover, you will still have to pay the rental company any costs incurred in Spain if you have an accident or damage the car in any way, but you then claim the costs back from the excess insurance policy once you're back in the UK.

I never pay any extra when picking up the car (unless it's for an extra driver - some companies won't take the money for that upfront, you have to pay it on arrival). The car we're picking up next week for 5 days has cost us the princely sum of €6.99. We already have the excess insurance (I can't remember how much it was) so when we get the car, the only thing we'll do is give them a credit card so they can block off the €1600-odd they always insist on in case you don't bring the car back!! But that isn't an actual charge - it's a guarantee.

Hi Deboragh

As the previous reply just mentioned, you are best to take out Car Hire Excess Insurance in the UK. I've just renewed ours with a company called Questor and it was around £28 for the year.

Please see below the advice I've cut and pasted from the www.moneysavingexpert.com site on which companies to compare for the best deals.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Ryan

First use excess car insurance comparison site Moneymaxim*. It is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), a Government scheme which protects your money if a firm goes bust.

Then check for special discounts

Many of the big providers offer special discount codes which can get you prices you won't see on comparison sites, so it's worth checking these too (they are also covered by the FSCS).

  • Eversure with 15% off. Go via this MSE link to Eversure* and use the code EE0117MSE.
  • Reduce My Excess with 20% off. Go via this MSE link to Reduce My Excess*and on the payment page enter the code MSE03.
  • Then try Direct Car Excess Insurance with 20% off. Use this MSE link to Direct Car Excess* and enter the code MSE2101.
  • Finally try Questor with a 25% off code. Use this MSE link to Questor Insurance* and then the code MSE2097.

What happens if you don’t have a credit card with 1600 euros credit on it?

They can refuse to hire you the car! It’ll be in the terms and conditions when you booked the car. And the credit card has to be in the name of the main driver too. No one else in the group can do it. I nearly got caught out once. I think the least I’ve ever had to leave was €1000.

We are coming over to San Javier Murcia in October also. We would need to hire a car for 2 weeks. Could you give us a few car hire company names that are reliable. Man thanks in advance

We tend to go through carrentals.co.uk and look for the best deal from a company we’ve at least heard of.

Rental from Murcia airport is generally more expensive than from Alicante but our most recent rental was €6.99 for 5 days. We have our own excess insurance so we’ll just pay for an extra driver on arrival (think that’s €41 for the 5 days) and they’ll block off €1600 from a credit card and we’re away.

Whatever you do, don’t ever hire from a company called Dickman’s. Not sure if they operate out of SanJavier but they apparently still do at Alicante. Total ripoff merchants. Thousands of bad reviews!

Hi,

Flamenca cars are great, they don't block anything on your card, the price you see is the price you pay. The company do not charge for additional drivers and they run a full to full policy on fuel.

They are very busy so book early, you can pay a deposit when booking and the balance a week before arrival. it is run by expats who are extremely helpful.

Kind regards

Susan
