Is it worthwhile importing an older car into Spain. The Spanish used cars tend to be overpriced and have very high mileage.

Not really, the cost of licence plate change etc can cost quite a lot. Plus there's the issue of it being RHD and not LHD. Safer to have a LHD. There are a few companies in the UK that sell LHD cars that have come from europe, may be worth looking for one of those  in the uk. Or go to a main dealer here and see what they have taken in as trade in if you're looking for second hand. It is cheaper (and safer)  here to buy new or 0 km.

Always a LHD car...much safer and easier to drive here.....Get a good second hand car from a reputable dealer and it will hold its value...and last longer without the UK winters!!

Simple answer is NO. Look at Citizens Advice Bureau Spain (brilliant organisation).

Buy a Spanish plated car or rent....depending on the length of your stays.

I agree, I imported my car to Spain however it was LHD so was not an issue, however, for the small saving you will make, you will pay in not having a LHD car.

RHD will become so frustrating.

Find a reputable local dealer, or person going back to the UK and get yourself a national car.

Spanish cars are not "overpriced" - they simply keep their value better than they do in the UK. This does mean that even if you have to pay a different price here you will get more for it when you sell. It is like alcohol prices in the UK are not overpriced, just more expensive.

All manufacturers and importers are obliged to sell their product at "the same" F.O.B. price to every EU state. The difference in the retail price of cars state by state depends on the specification level and taxation in the individual state. This has been the case since the 90's to eliminate the fact that once upon a time Spanish net prices were cheaper than UK net prices and a healthy trade in purchasing in Spain to register in the UK ensued.

PeterC is correct in saying cars are not overpriced in Spain and they hold their value for longer.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will buy a Spanish car as it seems the easiest path to take. Can anyone recommend a dealer in the Costa Calida area?
