Hi we have a Spanish car that is behind a locked gate on our driveway in Spain. The vehicle is disabled, our insurance runs out next week. Due to covid, we obviously don't know when we will be able to return to Spain from the UK. Could anyone advise if it is compulsory to have vehicle insurance under these circumstances?

Thanks Mike

No idea if it compulsory to have insurance.

But what happens if somebody breaks through the gates & steals it ??

Or if it catches fire ??

Anyway you have to give either one or two months notice to cancel car / home insurance in Spain I believe.

It is mandatory for a car to be insured in Spain, even if it is off the road "Baja".

Your only other option would be to scrap it - but make sure the scrapyard gives you papers showing it is scrapped, and use a reputable firm that will do all that is needed with DGT.

Yes, it is compulsory to insure the car whenever.

My car was in an underground car park during the Gota Fria and was under 30ft of water. A total write-off, but because of delays in getting an insurance assessor to declare it a 'write-off', had to re-insure, otherwise would have been liable for a large fine!

Crazy, but true!
