Hi Pauline,

I used an english interpreter to set up an account t but she was told that a referrent account could not be opened.

I then had to deposit 1037 euros to the account which cannot be touched until you close the account to get a no fee charge account.

The debit card etc will not be available until next thursday do you think that is still possible to change this to the referrent account?

Regards Bill.

It is a Wefferent account.

And yes it is available to non residents but you will have to go into a branch to open it.

Non residents cannot do it online.

Hi Bill,

I opened my wefferent account when in la Ribera in September...so in answer to your question it wasn't only available to residents, well not then. It may be more like what Pauline suggested and cajamar have changed their policy on opening the account...

Anni,

it's possible they have changed their policies, someone else with his friend this week tried to open account, were told they had to apply online but were given a customer no. and a code to open it. Anyway they did the online app upto the mobile no. which they input a UK no. and it kept stating error. Now Roland if I remember right said he opened his with a UK no but that was in branch like you and I did with an agent. So I,ve asked how he input no and waiting for his response. I already had Spanish sim and they used that no for both of us so I get msgs for Mr also. So, it seems they have changed their policy in that it has to be done online(but if you have been given a customer no it can be done online. Maybe I, ve sent them too many customers for free accounts. 😂. Lots of residents too angry their banks now charging fees or imposing conditions. I opened account with 2000+€ after closing Sabadell wasn't told there was any condition like Bill. I, ll keep an eye on how this plays out as I may have to change my guide.

Thanks to Steve for your comments but I hope it still is OK for non residents to open if now bit more arkward.

Regards

Pauline

Hi Bill

Oh dear, times they are a changing it seems. As you are now a customer with your new account, I would expect you should be able to open online. When you collect your debit card ask them how you can open a weferrent account and have you got the correct ID to open it online. (As said before Non res Nie, s were not recognised). Also ask can you transfer your 1037 to the weferrent account without any issues. To be honest I would never have less than 1500€ balance anyway so if I, d been told I needed to keep that balance minimum I wouldn't have been bothered. But we weren't told that. Can't blame this on Brexit, or can we? So many changes in the future. Please don't give up, I've been very happy with Cajamar.

Hi Martyn

It seems things have changed somewhat, maybe because so many people have been recommended to join them from all the other banks that have now started to charge fees to residents too.

When we applied we had UK phone numbers and I had a Spanish sim too so my Spanish no. was input for both of us, I didn't question if it had to be Spanish only but I get messages for both of us on that sim, just thought agent did it for cheapness. Maybe you have to have a Spanish no. then, another person on this forum said he,d been OK with his UK no so a while ago. Think it was Roland? so didn't think any more about it. Things do change though all the time and although maybe a little more arkward to apply online it will be worth doing. My Spanish sim is a payg "hits mobile" one I rarely use but I, ve had for 10yrs+. Bought from Internet again after a lot of research for cheap payg no. For 2€yr it retains the number without me topping up. I can top up online if needed but I also opted for an auto min credit recharge from my bank account if credit falls below 5€ so I never recharge myself but did do it online through their app before I discovered the auto top up. I have it because I,ve also got a house alarm which calls me and keyholder if it goes off and wanted a Spanish sim in it not UK one. So your answer is maybe get a Spanish sim. Google "hits mobile" you can order one to be sent to you so no need to shop around. It works on Vodafone network. Did you enter your UK no.with all nos ie 00447791999999(omit 0 at front of no.) as wouldn't recognise 07701999999 or maybe just 7791999999 omitting the 0. Now that all banking in EU has to have a tel no for extra security with codes being sent on certain transactions maybe you will have to get a spanish sim. Mine costs me 1 auto top up of 10€yr so not expensive. After Brexit things may change again when free roaming may stop. That's something I,m expecting. Annoyingly Tesco my UK sim can't tell me yet but I too may have to look for alternative to them if they pull plug on it as I only use UK data not Spanish sim. I don't have Internet just my home away roaming. Watch TV via large sat dish not WiFi. Do update with your process please as we all need to know how you get on. Remember nothing worth having comes easy.!!

Good luck

Regards

Pauline

Hi Pauline

I tried to register online again and although the bank has included my UK mobile number in the app profile and has sent texts to the number, at the end of the registration process the error message received is:

Transaction not completed. Please change your mobile number linked to home banking to one with 9 digits.

Clearly Cajamar wants a Spanish number and that will probably be confirmed tomorrow when I contact the helpline. I'll let you know

Hi Martyn

Could you just input the last 9 numbers or first 9 numbers maybe? Nothing is simple is it? What a palavar, making you work for your free account eh?

Having visited a branch in October and having downloaded the Wefferent app, I am still unable to open an account.  The stumbling block is inputting a UK mobile phone number as part of the account opening process.  The use of a UK phone number formed part of ongoing discussions between the Branch and its headquarters and it was hoped that there would be a resolution involving the app developers. It is now December and having tried the app again, the problem still exists. Do I think the app developers are going to do something about this? No. The answer therefore involves getting a Spanish sim card, revisiting the Branch and going through the setup procedure again. I am back in the UK and have bought a cheap Samsung S3 mini to facilitate this as I do not want to be constantly changing sim cards on my UK phone. Once back in Spain I will purchase the sim card that Pauling has recommended and see how we go from there.
