Can anyone tell me how I join the Spanish healthcare system. I’ve been told after 5 years in Spain I can pay a minimal monthly amount to join the system any advice would be helpful as I am having to keep travelling to uk for check ups as I had cancer last year and I can’t afford a private insurance. Thanks

If you check out the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain's website and their Facebook group, they have all the latest details regarding the Convenio Especial. It's after one year not five. Here's a link: https://www.citizensadvice.org.es/faqs-tags/convenio-especial/

Well, that depends on the doctor you have gone to see! I speak Spanish but my doctor always wants to speak English with me and she speaks it very well. This morning I had an appointment with the nurse and he also wanted to talk to me in English and even asked me to write down a phrase in English that he wasn't sure about. In areas where there are a lot of foreign immigrants, it's possible that the staff in the local Centro Médico speak some other languages but you would need to go with at least a smattering of Spanish and a basic Google translation of what you need to talk about, if you're not taking a Spanish-speaking person with you.
