Spanish Passport

You can apply for Spanish citizenship if you have been a permanent resident in Spain for 10 years or more. You would need to pass a Spanish language exam to a certain level and also pass an exam on the Spanish history, constitution, customs and be able to name certain Spanish personages from now and in the past. Once your citizenship has been confirmed, you would have to renounce your British citizenship, as dual citizenship with Spain is only permitted for citizens from certain central and south American countries and Sephardic Jews. In taking Spanish citizenship, your life would be ruled 100% by Spanish laws and inheritance laws, (which don't allow you to leave everything to your cat!). All in all, unless you have a particular reason for wanting to become Spanish, it's a lot easier to apply for the new TIE card, which would give you residency, initially for 5 years and then would need renewing every 10 years. Starting off the application for your TIE before the end of this month, when the UK completely leave the EU, will make it easier to become a resident. After 1st. January 2021, when British citizens are no longer EU citizens, the hoops to jump through will change and the financial aspect of applying for residency as a non-EU citizen, will be prohibitive for many people who would have been able to relocate to Spain, had Brexit not happened.
