Does anyone have any experience of buying a Spanish registered car in the UK and driving it for future use to Spain? What are the pitfalls, any taxes or import duties to pay or how to avoid them or how to check if there are any outstanding charges passed from a previous owner.

Thanks

Jeff

No import taxes but there is a tax on transfer of ownership.

But I suggest you get the advice of a Spanish gestor before you proceed, to ensure

(a) that the car's paperwork is in order

(b) that a form of contract is used whereby the vendor accepts responsibility for prior debt etc (not sure how enforceable this is)

(c) that a "justification" is prepared to enable you to insure/drive the car, while it is being re-registered to you/while the transfer tax goes through

(d) that 1.1.21 doesn't change any rules

We bought a car on Tenerife for use on mainland Spain. We photographed the car's papers and had our gestor OK them (by phone) before we bought the car.

Hi

If you are thinking of buying privately you must be very careful as to any outstanding embargoes on the car as you would be responsible,

Also you would need to know if the car has a current ITV. you can check theses details on Carfax for a small fee,

https://www.carfax.es/historial?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI46iqm9W77QIVjbTtCh1I4wugEAAYASAAEgLPefD_BwE

If you are buying from a reputable dealer and there are many in the Uk you should have no problems although I would still check with Carfax.as this will confirm how many owners the car has had, if it has been stolen or in an accident.

Hope this helps and a Merry Christmas to you.
