been looking at places to rent long term. couple of the apartments are opposite the hotel thalasia. we are 2 non drivers but can walk and cycle, is this quite a nice and handy place? would be greatful for any information.

Yes, you will be fine with a bike. I have a house in santiago de la ribera. I always cycle when I'm over. The area is completely flat so it's ideal for cycling.

San Ped and the area of it you mention is ideal. It's exactly where we are looking to early retire too, also without a car.
I think it's one of the best areas for walking & cycling as the Mar is on your right the Med on the left and the nature reserve in front.
There are local buses and of course it's on the route of the bus between Torrevieja & Cartagena.
