We arrived in San Pedro last night and today drove along the Mar Menor but were surprised to see the beaches all cordoned off with police tape, please can somebody tell me what has happened.

I think it’s because the sea is contaminated from the Gota Fria a month ago, friends sent me a video a few days ago of the fish which are all dying due to lack of oxygen

The fish, crustaceans and eels are dead in their thousands, the beach has been cleared to allow the environmental services to clear the rotting carcasses....the smell last Saturday was appalling. The desalinated rain that fell in huge quantity on 13th September has removed oxygen from the heavier salivated water that the fish live in, to keep up to date, join the sanpedro Del pinatar Facebook group....it is up to date with the problems and improvements in the area 😁

The good news is that as of 2pm today 17 October, the beaches at Villanantos and Lo Pagan have been cleaned and re-opened. People are in the Mar, however I don't think that I would want to go in just yet; the mar itself has to heal from this catastrophic event, it needs to re oxygenate, to restock and to recuperate. The beach however is going to be utilsed this weekend; I feel a good book and a snooze coming on :)
