Hi all

Is anyone having the same problem or am I missing something fundamental here!

I have a Wise debit card issued in the UK but my account holds only Euros. The account is used to pay my direct debits here in Spain. I used the card once in April whilst in Mazarron to withdraw € cash. I used Sabadell as they charge only €1.80 per transaction and withdrew €200 resulting in €201.80 being deducted from my Wise balance. I chose to be charged Euro currency (which I believe is what anyone should fo in the Euro zone).

Yesterday I withdrew €200 from the same account at the same Sabadell ATM. Result - €201.70 as expected PLUS an extra charge of over €9 taken by the bank despite me opting the Euro charge again.

Am I missing something here? Should I have ignored the choice of Euro or GBP offered or should I have done something else.

I think this is a bank rip-off but before I query it can anyone offer advice

Cheers

Hi, I had the same thing happen to me and I raised a dispute with Wise and they refunded the surplus very quickly. Like you I only had Eros on my account and chose local currency & Sabadell fee of €1.70 but the atm/bank decided to automatically convert my euros to sterling at a very poor rate, then converted it back again! Wise said the atm should have stated about the conversion and given me the option to say no, but it didn’t. Email Wise via their contact details. I must say I no longer trust getting cash out and will just use it to pay for goods, in the local currency. It’s a shame because it is a good rate.

I never use my Wise debit card to withdraw cash.

The options on the various ATM machines can be very unclear & perhaps done on purpose to sneak in some charges.

On a side note I have noticed over the last few months lots of debit card transactions made in shops, garages etc are asking if you want to pay on euros or GBP.

A bit annoying when the Wise debit card account is a euro account.

Yes, you’re correct Roland, if paying in the shop with the Wise card we’re sometimes asked € or GBP. No more Wise ATM cash withdrawals for me!!

Thanks Rubio61, I’ll raise an issue with Wise and see what happens. Hope I’m as lucky as you were but, lesson learned now and no cash withdrawals. Shame ss it worked like a charm in May.
