Can anyone in the Cartagena ayuntamiento area tell me when the I.B.I.year starts from and finishes

I sold my house in March and am told that I owe for this year.Unfortunalely I have no paperwork so I don't know when the bill was issued.

The IBI - and car road tax - are the responsibility of the owner on 1st January. The strange thing with both taxes is that the rates for either are not sorted out until later in the year, so the bills come in say August or September or whatever, depending on where you live.

If you are lucky, as a buyer you may get the vendor to agree that you only pay for when you are the owner (as happened to us) as as a vendor you can try to get the same agreement - makes sense with a big bill like IBI. Of course if the same agreement applies to the house you are selling you only pay for a year's IBI - say 3 months on your old house and 9 months on the new. Worst case is if you pay the whole year for both! Read the small print in your contracts, as always.

Thank you.

As I thought. If you owned the house on January 1st you are responsible for the whole year.It is unlikely that my buyers would agree to splitting the bill
