Recording TV
Can anyone suggest the most cost effective way to record TV without using a subscription service.
We aren't here all the time so just want to use it ad hoc.
We're on a cable system.
Thanks.

Hi Andy,
We had the same requirement and solved it by using an external hard drive connected to the Samsung TV. The cost was about 80 euro.
Now for the important points, firstly you mention you are on a cable system. For an external drive to record the different TV programmes at different times, the TV must be used as the tuner for selecting your cable channels. In other words, if you use a separate cable TV box this will not work. You can check with the TV instruction if you can use it as the cable tuner and connect a hard drive.
Other points, this approach is not like having a separate VCR recording programmes as it can only record and watch one channel at a time although it will switch recording channels at preset times. It is not possible to record one channel and watch another.
This solution is okay for us as the majority of time we just want to record soaps etc in the evening while we are out for dinner. Then watch them when we get back.
Hope this helps,
Peter
