Hola My fiancee and I have had a  home in Murcia region since 2014. Our retirement was planned for 2022 however Brexit has made us have to rethink our plans. We intend to register on the padron during our next visit in February. Then we in the first instance will put an extra 50,000 in our bank account and and in May with all the other documents in place apply for residencia in May/June. I understand I will have to exchange my UK driving licence for a Spanish one but have read reports that this has to be applied for before January 31st 2020.

My question is are we too late as we believed the transition period lasts until December 2020 which is what we have based our timetable on. We have also been told we need an income and not only money in the bank. We intend selling our UK hoe and putting all the funds in our Spanish account. This will equate to almost 400,000. I find it hard to believe that this will not be sufficient to prove to the authorities that we are not self sufficient.

Any experiences would be appreciated. Thank You

Hi Mark.

As far as I see it nothing is going to change until December of 2020.

As for the amount of money in your account that will be more than sufficient to prove you are not dependant on anyone else to live there.

They will probably make you mayor of your area.

To be fair no one actually knows what we or the Spanish will agree on, however my partner and I have nothing of your collaterals but are still going to move there.

Nothing ventured nothing gained, have to give it a whirl, if not we will never know, and I'm not prepared to sit back anymore.

Hola,

You aware about tax liability on your ALL worldwide incomes when you become a Spanish resident ?

Not so sure how many people should know your bank account balance in here, but good financial advice would be very beneficial for you before you start moving your funds around.

Just a thought

Hi Mark

May I suggest that you do not put that amount of money into a Spanish bank account until you actually need to use the money then transfer it to the people concerned.

Over the many years, I have been in Spain 20+ I have heard many horror stories about funds being misappropriated and know people that have literally had their money taken. without there consent.

I instance many years ago a friend sold his house on Camposol and put the proceeds into his bank in Mazarron, the next month he thought he would buy a new car, went to the bank to withdraw the cash, to be told he had a zero balance? The branch manager in his wisdom considered that he should invest the money for himself.it took nearly 5 months to sort out.

Also, be aware that if the Spanish tax authority considers that you have not declared this money they will put an embargo on your account until you can prove it was obtained legally ( "Oh" the joys of living in Spain lol).

Don't let this put you off it is a great country to live in just be careful.

"Happy New Year"

ED

Good advice Eduardo.

Mark always keep an English bank account, can I also say look at smart money and fx 1 pay, we often get around between 115 to 120+ depending on exchange rates.

However much better than the high street.

Be aware that for a tax-resident any group of assets valued at 50,000 Euros or more, held outside Spain, must be declared to the taxman on Form 720. Fines for non-disclosure are massive.

As others have said get good professional advice to make sure your dream does not become a nightmare.

I agree.

Mark just be clever with your assets, all previous posts have great advice, all I will say is the more money you put into your Spanish account the more they love you.

Put in what you need to come out, and not a great deal more, as long as you can prove that your self sufficient you should have no worries.
