You are right you cannot travel according to UK government, and they rule in UK not Spain.

You can of course go to Spain via Ireland, I am not sure of the status of Wales to Ireland, but Scotland to NI is UK then to the Republic and on according to the rules there.

Best of luck, I'm sitting tight in UK until things get better in Europe

As an Irish national, with an Irish passport, you are alllowed into Spain (as an EU citizen).

However, if you live in the UK, you are not allowed to travel abroad for holidays, so unless you have one of the permitted reasons to travel, then you can't leave the UK.

If you can travel, then you would need an approved Covid test with a negative result on the way out; and then to return you would need to have a PCR test in Spain, with a negative result; pre-ordered the Day 2 & Day 8 tests (at a cost of approx. £210) and also to quarantine at home for 10 days.

Hope this helps!

I’m not so sure how correct this is......yes you can travel from Ireland to Spain, but according to Spain only for essential reasons, which is the same for other nationalities arriving in Spain. Also Spain hasn’t opened regions yet and I doubt that an Irish passport will get you through if you’re not entitled......but I stand to be corrected.

Annie you could be right with direct from Ireland but France will allow you in so there is a route, but very hard, better to wait, the rules are to help prevent spread, and I am staying put till I am happy, not bothered about any government.

Entry rules in response to coronavirus (COVID-19)Entry to Spain

Entry restrictions and testing requirements continue to apply for travel to Spain.

Only citizens and legal residents of the European Union, Schengen states, Andorra, Monaco, The Vatican (Holy See), and San Marino, and those who can demonstrate through documentary evidence an essential need to enter Spain, will be granted passage under current travel restrictions.

As per above, there are no restrictions on movement for citizens of EU countries (they need negative PCR tests, etc.); however, there are restrictions on everyone else (inc. UK citizens).

Within Spain, you can move through regions to get to the place you are staying or to & from an airport for example, but not just travel where you want. The anomaly is that a resident of Madrid can't technically travel to their holiday home in Murcia, but an Irish citizen can fly to Madrid and then drive to their holiday home in Murcia.

Thank you very much for explaining this so clearly.

I should have appreciated , and all this is on the UK Govt website too I see that it appears I am NOT allowed into Spain currently. Although I am an Irish national, I am resident in the UK so although a citizen of the EU I do not reside there so I would not be let in.

Is that how you understand it?.
