Hi I am trying to work out what would be best to do either purchase a car for when I am out in San Pedro or hire a car. We recently purchased a holiday home and have been out twice this year already we plan to go back out at Easter and to stay for July and August with a possible 2 further short breaks before Xmas. If I purchased a car it would have to be automatic and probably just something to get my family back and forth fro airport and to the shops.  What do others do who have holiday homes in this area?

I bought a car 9 years ago when car hire prices became ridiculous.

Best thing I ever did.

If you are coming out for all of July & all of August this is when the car hire prices get silly.

Sounds like buying a car would be the best thing for you to do.

There seem to be more and more problems with car hire companies now & they seem to be a law unto themselves. Charging for damages, fuel, missing items etc etc.

Plus the hassle of standing in a queue at the airport for ages.

An annual car parking contract will cost you around 300 euro per year. I have used this company for 9 years excellent service highly recommended.

Hello we were in the same situation and literally 1 week ago bought a second hand car automatic /hybrid petrol at the dealer in san pedro. First we were looking at bringing the car from UK but were put off by bad reviews of the dealers. We visited numerous dealers in alicante and la zenia areas. After reading some horror stories about second hand market round here especially in more touristy areas were very unsure what to do. By pure chance poped in to the dealer in san pedro and found hybrid toyota. It's been a month and the car is still ok. They even registered us as keepers free of charge. The car dealer is called Grupo Premium near Consum in san pedro del pinatar. Mario speaks perfect english.

Looked at brand new car with small mileage prices start from €13000. I totally understand your dilemma. I think buying a car gives you flexibility and don't need to worry about scratches etc.

Thanks very much yeah I totally agree we have had to take videos of hire cars when picking them up because of previous issues with car hire companies saying we caused damage to rims etc when we didn’t. Heading  back out next week so will call into a few dealers etc. I assume there is car tax etc and who is best for car insurance?

Yeah weighing it all up I think it is best to buy a car but don’t want to spend a lot as it will be parked up for at least half the year but will take a look around local dealers. Thanks

We paid €6200 for 2007 model. Pay premium for automatic gasolina. If you don't mind manual diesel there is a huge choice. We bought at group premium dealer. I don't know if I can recommend them yet as waiting for our papers. Can update in couple of weeks. The road tax should be paid by the previous driver and it lasts until the next year. Insurance we bought from easy Insurance cover company in la zenia comprehensive for €440. I think it's going to be cheaper for diesel manual.  Make sure before buying obtain traffico report and we also purchased carfax report. Feel free to call me I try to help if I can 07919091267

Many thanks for this information. We have hired a car for our next trip which will be in a few weeks for Easter will use this time to look around. Ideally I would like our own car for the summertime.  Much appreciated Danielle
