Hi we have done the route you are taking with a dog twice. I agree that an overnight stop is best if you are arriving at Santander in the evening but I am a bit confused why you would stay anywhere near Valencia as that is well out of the way from Santander to San Pedro del Pinatar. The quickest route we found was by passing Burgos then passing Madrid then on to Albacete then into Murcia...9 hours approx with a few stops. Burgos is approx 2 houes from Santander and there is an excellent pet friendly hotel just off the motorway so you do not even need to go into the city. Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for the note. This was one of 3 routes the route planner suggested and we chose it to avoid getting too close to Madrid. However it would be good if you could let me know the name of the hotel near Burgos if you can remember it. Thanks. Ian

Does anyone know if the new pet health certificate has to be translated before travel on the ferry ? And once in Spain how easy is it to get the dogs an EU pet passport ?

Many thanks

We have been informed by our vet that they are advising everyone with a holiday home in the EU to get a European Pet Passport next time they are in the EU so it will be much easier and cheaper to travel in future. We are booked to go in June and assume that this will be an easy process if we have a Spanish address. I think the health certificate is translated - we have an appointment to take our dogs to the vet four days before we travel but have been told we will need to back a couple of days later to collect the certificates as there is so much paperwork.

Thank you for this, we are also planning to travel over in June we thought we would have had our NLV's sorted by then but that is not going to happen now, so we are going to travel out for a couple of months then come back and apply for the Visa's later as we cannot guarantee having our passports back in time.

There are no pet cabins left for travel from Portsmouth to Santander until at least October and we do not want to leave it that long to get out.

Without an address in Spain we will not be able to get them EU passports until our sale has completed and that is delayed because of the military permit. Which will apparently take a minimum of 2 months but could be 4 months.

Hi Angela.  Yeah we saw that re Britanny Ferries it seems a lot of the boats are full as well.  Not sure what it's like putting your dog in one of the kennels there - I assume you have access to the kennels most of the time and can take the dog to the exercise area.  It does seem a long time for the crossing.  We are in the Channel Islands so usually drive from St Malo (in Britanny) down to Bordeaux, stay overnight then drive to Murcia the next day.  Not sure what the situation is in France with us driving through.  We are booked on the ferry on 21 June but had also looked at Britanny Ferries with a view to going to Portsmouth or Plymouth and doing the crossing directly to Spain from there.  We have two old black labradors and they are fine in our car on the overnight ferry to Portsmouth from the Channel Islands but Britanny Ferries does take quite a while.  If the situation in France improves you could always look at travelling from Poole to St Malo on Condor Ferries where your dog stays in your car - not sure if that would be better?  The prices are quite good but you would probably have a couple of stops on the way to pick up passengers from the Channel Islands. I would imagine they would let you take the dog out at some point. Good luck with everything it sounds very exciting.

You need to have a antigen / lateral flow test with a negative result within 72 hours of your ferry departure - should cost about €30-€40 and be done in 30 mins.

You need to complete a Passenger Locator Form via the gov.uk website; and also (assuming you've been double-vaccinated) pre-book a Day 2 test to be delivered to your address in the UK (and if you're travelling to Scotland, you can only book this via the Scot.gov website). You will also need proof of your vaccinations - via the NHS app if they were carried out in the UK; or the EU Digital Vaccine Certificate, if they were carried out in Spain, or elsewhere in the EU.

If you've not been double-vaccinated, then the same as above, but you will need to pre-order a Day 2 & Day 8 test package and quarantine for 10 days from arrival.

Hope this helps!
