Hi guys, is there any one near Calasparra that breeds Rottweilers?

We would prefer to buy a pup is Spain when we move Calasparra next year. Otherwise we would buy one here and bring it with us.

Thanks Alan & Elaine.

Thanks Alan & Elaine.

There are stringent rules in Spain regarding this type of dog.

You need to read up on the rules in Spain.

I had a quick browse to see what I could find. The nearest breeders I could find are in Alicante province. But you never know if somebody local is breeding a litter so if you're looking for a pet rather than a showdog you might find out about a litter (in Spanish camada) through a local vet closer to the time. Calasparra Dog Rescue could be worth a try too, or Econciencia or Colitas y Bigotes. These are all dog rescues in the northwest of Murcia, although you are more likely to find an adult rather than a purebred puppy. These rescues all have Facebook pages.

There is a Spanish club:  www.cre-es.com    but they do not have a list of breeders (at the moment).

When you're ready to seriously look into it try searching using words like: rottweiler criadores España (rottweiler breeders Spain).

Roland makes a very valid point. Personally I have never met a "bad" rottie. I think Dave and his mates on Gogglebox are a wonderful advert for them as family dogs!!

Hi, to own a rottweiler here you will need a special  licence which is renewed every 5 years. You have to be physically fit and have no mobility problems. You have to pass a psychometric / aptitude test and have no serious criminal convictions. You also need insurance, a bit like public liability. The dog also has to be on a lead and wear a muzzle at all times in public places. It isn't expensive to do all this and the tests are simple but it is paperwork! . They are classed as PPP ' perro potencialmente peligroso' so if you look up PPP you will get the info you need and where to get the paperwork in your area. Usually the town hall issue the licence.

Dax that was interesting. I found this:

www.ayuntamientomurcia-salud.es/index.php/areas/veterinaria-y-zoonosis/2-uncategorised/374-animales-potencialmente-peligrosos

It's interesting that Murcia only recognises 8 breeds and their crosses, Valencia has a longer list including Dobermans and Bullmastiffs.

Yes, it's all different depending on your region of Spain, but is is doable if you are responsible. Also different rules for visitors bringing their pets on holiday but that is a comprehensive list you've found. One other thing, technically only the person that holds the licence can walk the dog in public and must be over 18. Something else to consider.

Long time ago now, my husband was talking to his neighbour on an Alicante bound flight. She lived in Ciudad Quesada in Alicante province. She had a rottie and was telling him about all the hoops she had to go through to keep it in Spain. One thing he remembers she said is that the Police would turn up unexpectedly from time to time to check that her garden was still as secure as ever!
