It comes included with your car insurance usually. If you break down you call the insurance company and they send a rescue vehicle, usually a small tow truck. They will either fix it or take the car to a garage and then take you home. You need to be able to tell them the name of a local garage to take it to otherwise they will take you to the nearest main dealer for your make of vehicle. That's my experience anyway with línea directa.

If your insurance doesn't include the cost of a breakdown service, just look up the nearest "grua" service to wherever you are broken down. They're the guys with the breakdown truck that comes to take your vehicle to the nearest taller or wherever you ask them to take it. If you're not covered by insurance for this, you'll have to pay.

I have had my insurance with Liberty Seguros for 16 years and the policy I have is totally comprehensive, includes home start, windscreen damage, roadside assistance, in fact, everything an old lady on her own needs! I have had to call them a couple of times and as a lady driver get priority with very rapid response time. I am very satisfied with the service and care given by this company.

I speak Spanish, so that’s useful dealing with the breakdown men, but they’re professional so it doesn’t matter too much. However, I deal with a Broker, who has been amazingly helpful and supportive for 16 years!
