Santander to the Port is a long drive but I do it in one go. Roads are great but there is no need to pay for them, I always use 'ordinary' roads. It depends how you drive and what you want to see on the way, my satnav has taken me to some amazing places in Spain! Choice of overnight stops are not as good as in France, so I would suggest looking online for them before you travel. Someone mentioned scammers en route. This can happen anywhere, just be aware and use common sense when parking up at service areas etc.Good luck, it's a great road trip.

Hi,

Last year I drove from Santander to Los Alcazares, motorway all the way, A67\231 to Burgos then down to Madrid on the E5 then the E901 via Albacete. There were NO toll charges on that journey and it took me 7.5 hours although it takes an hour longer at a more leisurely pace! There is also a fairly cheap (and very nice) place to stop halfway at Perales de Tajuña (Hotel Rural El Lagar de Nemesio £68)

We drove from Bilbao to Los Alcazares, took the Rosslare ferry. We followed Google maps a very straightforward journey, two tolls  you take a ticket and pay at end of one and the other at a booth. We stopped off a few times.

I guess it's up to you to decide based on cost and what you enjoy doing...

I don't know the cost of a ferry from Rosslare to Cherbourg. From there you got 2 long days driving (maybe 3, depending on when you arrive at Cherbourg) to cover approx. 1,200 miles to this area, so depending on your vehicle, etc, say £300 in fuel, plus 1 or 2 nights hotel stay and maybe £100 i...

...n tolls (and, if you are calculating costs, then double this to include the return journey). However, you'll see lots of France (albeit from a motorway or main road, while travelling at 70 mph!). This is a long journey for anyone and if you are not feeling confident or competent about driving that distance 'on the wrong side of the road', then it could be stressful.

Alternatively, you could get the ferry from Rosslare to Bilbao, which will take about a day and a half and will cost £1,000+ for a return and then you have a long day's drive to this area (say 550 miles). I haven't taken this crossing, but I understand the ferries are quite nice, you can get fresh air, meal, sleep in a cabin overnight, etc. - but then how are your sea legs? It's a relatively long time on a ferry across the Irish Sea and the Bay of Biscay and if you are ill or don't sleep well, then you won't feel great for a long drive when you arrive...

Take the ferry to Spain, more cost effective than going through France.I went Portmouth-Santander,lovely journey. Drove down from there, booked overnight hotel outside Madrid then down to Costa brava. Not one toll to pay, opposed to the long drive down via toll roads in France.

I think Rosslare only goes to Bilbao.  Much in the difference do you know??

That's super information.....I have a lot of planning.  Thank you so much!

Hi have just done Roslare to Murcia. Ferry to Bilbao and 12 hrs drive to Murcia. About 15 euro tolls quiet motorways and beautiful scenery. The ferry is basic but comfortable I done the morning sailing so you do 1 night on board and get off fresh in the motorway driving. All the best

Probably, not sure, but not much difference, Bilboa next to Santander. Brittany ferries were lovely, new boats and Ist morning breakfast Included in the price, whole experience was a pleasure and stress free.Good luck and enjoy Spain 🇪🇸

Correct  yes.  The motorway between Santander n Bilbao  is horrible. Mainly cause its twisted and very busy. It's about an hours journey.

Most UK people have 2 choice   come down to Madrid then head west, or head west to Bilbao then south

As you are coming into Bilbao you probably best to go south  if heading to murcia.

We came back to Santander via Madrid and I don't think the motorway was as new or as good .

I have travelled both routes and my preference would be into Spain, whether Bilbao or Santander depending on which ferry operator you choose. Enjoy whichever route you choose. J
