Hello, in December this year we will be driving from San Pedro del Pinatar to Santander to take the ferry back to the UK. I’d like some comments on two things please. Firstly, the best route, would it be best via Madrid or Zaragoza - am thinking if there is snow and ice. Secondly, with regards to snow chains. I’ve looked on Amazon and there is a huge range from very expensive items to much cheaper re-usable plastic/nylon ties that can easily be fitted and removed. Does any9ne know if these cheaper alternatives are ok. Many thanks for any comments.

I would suggest going via Madrid and stick to the motorways.

If the weather is bad enough for you to need snow chains, you almost certainly shouldn't be driving!

My thoughts entirely.

Be VERY careful  :)

We came down via  Zaragoza and the road was excellent up North but it did pass thru Swiss like mountains,  so heading back in Jan we decided to go via Madrid.

I checked the weather 10 15 degrees. So I thought  ahh sure I won't the snow chains.. Well  when we got past Madrid the road started to rise n rise..and the temp outside the car went down n down. I was sweating buckets as the other half marvelled how beautiful the snow was on watch side of the road and the temp gauge hit zero

As we got further north  maybe we accidentally made a mistake cause the motorway went into single line traffic for a bit  again in the mountains with snow.

However there was no snow on the road throughout  so we survived. If I was doing it again I'd go back via Zaragoza.. but definitely get some snow chains n even if it says temp 10 to 15  take ut with a pinch of salt.

Great journey though :)

Before I moved down here I drove Bordeaux - Zaragossa 2014 - 2020 through every weather, never needed snow chains!!

If you stick to the motorways they clear the road.....

I just recommend "winter tire" which cope with the new falling dust of snow.

Be aware the snow chains have special regulations >only allowed if the road has a risk of "using snow chains"< : ask N332 on Facebook.

If you insist of using snow chains I recommend to train yourself to put them on. In 95% of the situation it will be during the night you have to put them on. (I (now 68Y) put them on during my time going skiing in the alps 1970 - 2005)...it's not easy)

An other option: www.wetter.de has a section of "travelling routes weather forcast" (Reisewetter)  - BUT just 3 days in advance.

Hi

Anyone have an idea how much it would cost to bring a car from Ireland to Murcia including the  price of the ferry tolls and fuel.  As we are considering either buying one in Spain or bringing  one over but think it might cost too much to bring  one over.

Thanks

You really should post this as a new thread to get a range of answers.

However, Rosslare - Bilbao ferry, then drive to Murcia would be around £500 for the ferry (depending on the season) and then approx. £100 in fuel.

You then need to check whether you need to get the car matriculated (re-registered in Spain, headlights re-aligned, IVT (MOT), etc.) and if you would be liable for Import Tax and/or IVA - these would apply from the UK, but I don't know about from RoI.

You then need to consider if it's safe and practical to drive a right-hand drive car in Spain long term - safety when overtaking, practicalities at toll booths, car park ticket machines, etc...

Hope this helps!
