Hi all

We’re buying a property in San Pedro del Pinatar and are due to complete in the next couple of weeks.  As we can’t come over, due to the restrictions, please can you recommend a company for house/contents insurance?

Many thanks

Hi Cathy, We'll be doing exactly the same and got a really good deal from our Bank for the house insurance. Banks can charge a lot of money to prepare the bankers' cheques for the purchase of the house and our bank was going to charge us more than 300€ for a couple of cheques but if we took out our house insurance with them, they'd do the cheques for about 30€ instead and so for the same 300€, we got the bankers' cheques and insured a new-build house valued around 300k! Also worth noting that if you have a loan or an insurance policy with your bank, as well as getting your pensions/salaries paid in directly, you won't be charged a monthly charge. Our bank is Sabadell.

There are a lot of reports on here about bank insurance not paying out when you make a claim.

So be aware.

Look at somebody like Ibex.

I took out Caixa bank insurance.   When I was burgled last year  ( they got in during lockdown and took EVERYTHING)  I found them to be excellent,  the bank gave me a Caixs helpline number to call with english speaker on other end. The insurance assessment guy (who spoke english ) came within a day or two, they paid out within a few weeks. To be honest they were excellent.  Be sure and take a video of your apartment   it helps enormously when highlighting what may have been stolen . Good luck

Cathy,

When we purchased our house we were with Sabadell and were offered house insurance however we found a cheaper and as good a policy (as far as we knew) with MAPFRE....in case you don’t know, if/when you decide to change insurance company you have to give the current insurer 2 months written notice of your intention to leave them.
So far this is the only service I have found which requires such notice...changing electric etc is much easier.

The same notice is required with car insurance as well.

It's only one month's notice now that you have to give for the cancellation of any insurance policy. Best done in writing, so that you can prove that you informed them! I've been waiting for Mapfre to refund the 10 unused months of the house insurance policy that I took out with them for the house that we sold back in October. They did say that it wouldn't be a problem when we took it out but not so quick in refunding.
