Does any dog owners have information on the new third party insurance we have recently heard about please?
we’ve looked on the internet without any luck. Also if we get this insurance do we also have to have a pet NIE? Our dog is already chipped of course

Thanks in advance

Ch

Most of the insurance companies offer this cover, its about 50 euros a year depending on the age and breed of the dog. If you look at the big insurance companies in spain you will see they now offer policies. AXA, Mapfre, Adeslas are a few but I think most will be jumping on the bandwagon to make more money!.

A lot of people will tell you that your dog is covered by your house insurance but you need to look at the small print as this cover may only be in the actual house or garden or within a certain distance of your house. It's better to get a separate policy.

Www.rastreator.com is a comparison website for civil liability insurance and general pet insurance.

If your dog was chipped in Spain then a card should have been sent to show that it's registered in the region where you live. I would imagine that this will link to the new 'dni' for dogs as it is being called.

There is little clear information on this at the minute as the new animal welfare laws come in at the end of September.

I get my insurance for my dog via Kay Jackson ([email protected]). They offer 'normal' insurance plus the public liability insurance that is now required.

You also need to check if your dog is classed as a PPP dog (perros potencialmente peligrosas) - a 'dangerous dog', as you need a licence and there are separate rules, which also vary by province. For example, I have a German Shepherd Dog, which is not classed as PPP in Murcia, but would be in other regions.

Hope this helps!
