Dear CB18,  programmes like A Place in the Sun has been a real life line for people like me confined to home during the pandemic.   It provides good insight ( and hope) in to the possibilities abroad backed up by seminars on their website on the buying process.   Nobody is forced to buy.

We just bought a 4 bed property that only needs cosmetic work in a quaint village in Andalucia, 5 min from Lake Negratin and 2 hours from Vera for €82500 all included. Of course, if you want to stay on the coast, you will not find such a bargain. Our current rental property is €600 + bills. Electricity bills are now 2 to 3 times higher than at the same time last year so our rental costs with all bills are €1000. With our bargain property, we will pay half of this...so for us, renting is absolutely not a better option

€400 a month on utilities very expensive but each to their own I suppose. I know exactly where you have bought the property as I was in Galera for 4 months, it bloody freezing 🥶 in the winter.

I don't know where Galera is. The place where we bought is only cold at night in January but we do not mind. And yes water and electricity prices have gone to the roof...everywhere in the world, not only Spain but we are having solar installed so it should balance eventually

Well I don't know what programme you've been watching because I've never seen an episode of "A Place in the Sun", where the buyers have been forced into buying anything! I understand that "A Place in the Sun" informs all prospective buyers about the law, the legal requirements, and the taxes in...

...volved in buying a property in Spain, off-camera. Your opinion is to rent a property. Fine. That's your opinion! Many others have viewed properties and bought them and are deliriously happy with their purchases and sour grapes from others, won't be likely to burst their bubbles. Maybe the amounts that you quote, are sufficient to cover the costs of a basic rental property in Aguilas but they wouldn't cover 50% of the cost in other areas of the province. Your 180,000€ investment in a property would sell for a lot more than that after a few years as well, as property prices have been increasing substantially in the past year or so. You've been living here a mere 5 years. I'll be hitting 40 years living in Spain next year and wouldn't change any of it for the world! Nobody forces anyone to move to Spain or to buy a property here but I'm sure that the majority of those who have done, are very happy with their choices. Life's Good!

Well said

I’m sorry you had a bad experience. I bought a house in Aguilas although I’d never been to Aguilas before. How long does it take to decide whether a place is right or wrong for you? It took me 1 week in which I found out about shops, sport Centres, bars and restaurants and nearby easy to get to bigger towns, shopping centres and airports

I don’t know what kind of rental you think you would get for 500 and anyway doubt that that amount would include monthly costs for communal fees, electricity and water. I wouldn’t want to run the risk of having to move again because the landlord changes his mind and wants the property for himself or looses interest and neglects it.

I completely agree with Mags that if you buy, maintain and improve your property carefully, there’s not going to be a loss if you want to resell it.

That’s my opinion.  Simply different.

We bought our house in the north of Sweden during our first ever trip to Sweden and we visited the area for one day only. 3,5 years later we left Holland to live in Sweden permanently. Some people need a certain amount of time "to land and settle" in a certain area and house. For those people I think it's the right step to rent first because buying and selling property can be costly when you're buying or selling at the wrong time. Personally I feel that renting a house is a pure waste of money. You're only sponsoring the owner of the rental and you're not building up your own net worth. Just my 2 cents.
