Hi can anybody tell me if it’s legal in Spain to carry a dog harnessed on the front seat of a van as it has no rear seats, driving down from Bilbao next week and would prefer to have dog on front seat than in a cage in back  can’t seem to get a definitive answer on this as I know dogs should travel in back seat in a car help!,,,

I'm  not 100% but I think they should be prevented from from entering the driving compartment, so I think the answer is no they must be in the rear of the vehicle

I got pulled over leaving Santander port a couple of years ago as the dogs were just loose on the back car seats. Had to fit them with the lead that clips into the seatbelt.

With a van, I’m not sure but you may be ok if you have seat belt leads.

Let’s face it, you can get done for loose bags in the foot wells.

Personally, I’d check your local Spanish solicitor for clar

Steve, for the definitive answer to your question go to the N332 website run by the Guardia Civil, access the Spanish Traffic Laws manual page 71 transporting animals in a vehicle.

The book of the Spanish Traffic Laws, all 522 pages, is available to read or download for free.

The website is designed by the Guardia Civil for English drivers.

It gives clear precise guides to the regulations including photo examples.

The contents of the 552 pages can be amazing and in some cases contradict what normal English drivers "assume" would be the rules often leading to big fines for an offence.

I am always amazed that ex pats drive round Spain without learning the contents of this book which sometimes contradict one's expected knowledge of the  UK driving rules.

Trust this helps you and many others.

Regards Al

PS you can register on this site and get daily news from the Guardia Civil on traffic problems as they occur,  news and updates.

Hi Steve12,

Did you make the journey? If so how did you do it please? I’m planning to drive from the UK next month with my Westie in a Renault Trafic. The cab has air-con and I was considering getting one of those travel cage things from Pets at Home and harnessing it to the passenger seat.

Regards,

David.
