Can someone tell me what the procedure is for buying a Spanish car as a non-resident please?

I'm coming over next weekend, initially I have a six month rental contract but have every intention of it being much more long term.

My priority will be to get a Spanish car, I'm just looking at a runaround so it will be second hand. Can I just buy it and get it insured immediately like I would in the UK and what sort of documentation if any do I need?

TIA

Daz

I would strongly recommend Paul Callaghan of CarsinSpain, Paul does all the paperwork including insurance and he is really helpful, have a look at his cars he has for sale www.carsinspain.es he is based at Torre-Pacheco which is near San Javier Murcia Airport, we purchased our LHD Spanish car from him in May this year.

Many years ago 1992 when I bought my first home in Spain and before this I was renting in various regions enjoying the Spanish life style.

I was always renting cars from various companies, I decided that it would be better to buy a small run around, I bought a left hand drive uk reg Vauxhall Astra estate, in England and was the  best thing I ever did always back and forth to UK and some times left it in Spain, bought over all the items I needed when I completed my first purchase of a house, I then sold the car for a profit in the UK.

I always had the car insured and MOT in the UK and never tried to flaunt the law by taking chances, was stopped quite a few times by the Spanish Police to check documentation and had no problems.

This could be a solution to not having and NIE?

Long winded I know to your original question but many happy memories for me.

Regards

Ed

Nice one Ed, and thanks for the reply.

I gave Paul a ring as advised and we have actually worked out a solution :D
