How easy is it to get a mortgage? My partner is Spanish, I’m registered severely sight impaired but I’m qualified as holistic therapist & do tarot/oracale card readings and would like to use these. Would I be able to set up own business or is it best I work for someone?

Good morning,

In obtaining a mortgage in Spain is basically the same as any other other country, it would depended on your circumstances and income.

As your partner is Spanish he should be aware of the situation and costs of setting up a business or going self employed, which are very high.

Possibly you speak perfect Spanish which would maybe assist you with finding employment, however unemployment rate is very high and I do not think you would find any employment with the skills you have.

Firstly, you should explore your options for rights to live & work in Spain. Do you already have residency or will you need to go through the visa process? If you could update on this, I can provide some more info, etc...

Post-Brexit, the residency process has become more complicated.

Basically, if you intend to work, you need a working visa (cost approx. £400) and a firm job offer from an employer (and, in some circumstances, the employer will need to show that you have a special skill and a Spanish citizen could not have done the job).

If you were going to be self-employed ('autonomo'), you need an autonomo visa (similar cost) and need to submit a firm business plan and also prove you have sufficient income to support yourself if the business didn't achieve it's targets.

The link below should help you see what is required...
