Hello

We are looking to retire to LMC this year but my Wife has a condition called Ulcerative Colitis and is prescribed a very specific drug  for the condition. We are trying to make contact with any hospital or medical centre to ask if we are able to get this drug in the Murcia region. Any help or guidance would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Clinton

In the same way, if you moved area within the UK your wife would have to follow whatever regime her new doctor recommended for her, which could be different to her current GP or specialist.

You can Google her present medicine and see what is said about it in Spain - availability, cost etc.

On a visit to the UK the practice I registered with as a visitor changed my insulin pens, and my Spanish GP happily put that on my list of medicines here, despite it being a little more expensive so you may have nothing to worry about.

The other issue to consider is that you will need a Non Lucrative Visa to retire here permanently and, as part of that, you will need to obtain private healthcare, which may be quite expensive to cover pre-existing conditions such as described. This doesn't apply if you are already of state pension age, as you can get an S1 for this aspect of the NLV.

You may, of course, have considered this already, but, if not, I would suggest you start getting quotes, etc...

Thank you for your reply Peter.

We have done a lot of research into this as her medicine is relatively expensive and not widely available. I believe we have got a contact now at one of the Murcia hospitals.

Appreciate your time

Thanks Rich and am in the process of doing some research into this. We are looking to retire to LMC and one of the issues i am having is the vast difference in costs for the first years private insurance. I am not looking for the cheapest but one quote for myself and my Wife was for 11,000 euros for one year and another for 3500 euros for the year with very little, apparent, differences between them.

Anyway, I will keep on researching and thank you again for taking the time to reply to me

There are specific policies, which must not include 'co-payments', which are acceptable for the NLV. Many companies offer these.

We used Sanitas (which is part of BUPA), as our bank had a linked offer. I have seen DKV recommended by other people on this forum. The policy needs to be paid up front for a year and be 'live' at the date of the NLV application.

We were 50 & 48 at the time of application, with no pre-existing conditions and our policy cost around £1,200 for the two of us. I have seen people with pre-existing conditions getting quotes as high as £6,000 pa each, so it's important to shop around as prices vary significantly. However, as soon as one of you qualifies for the S1, I understand that applies to both of you.
