Bird mess

Hi, can anyone advise me on how to stop birds nesting in the back of my air conditioning units on the outside wall please. They are eating away all the insulation padding on the pipes
Could you not wrap chicken wire around it to stop them getting in? Local cooperative have rolls of it.
