Hi All

Just purchased our first car on Spain and wanted correct info on legal tax test requirements

I understand the car requires Spanish equivalent of UK MOT (period based on age of car) but I’m not sure  about Spanish equivalent of Road Fund Licence (tax). If anyone can tell me correct requirefor this and how/ where to obtain I’d be very grateful

The "MoT" is called the ITV -  needed once a car is 4 years old, then every 2 years up to 10 years old. There are centres that do this, not garages. NB if the vehicle is registered as a hire car or van testing is more frequent. Look in the "fisha tecnica" or log book of the car which will have been stamped at last ITV and give date of first registration. You can take it yourself but look up the words like lights/brakes/tyres etc as they often do not speak English, or many garages will check the car and take it for its ITV for you (for a fee of course).

Fees vary by car type. You can Google "ITV near me" and get the contact details for appointments, and the fees.

Regarding the road tax, the car should be registered to you at your town hall. and the easiest way is to ask them to set up a direct debit then you need not worry about it. For most cars the fee will be under 100 Euros

Whoever owns the car on January 1st is responsible for paying that years tax....if you buy anytime throughout the year the tax should have been paid. Check with the town hall if you're not sure but even though its due in January they don't send the letters or take direct debit payments till around April/May.

My annual tax is 26€!

Good grief,  my annual Rd Tax here in Ireland is €1200 for the year, they base it on emissions and your accent, more so if English!  Another reason to depart for Spain.

We recently had our first ITV done on our VW Touran at the San Javier centre.  It cost around €54 and took 10 minutes.  They advised us that you don't generally need to make appointments as it is not that busy.  It is a brand new test centre.  Surprisingly they do speak English there and were very helpful and gave us a box of fresh oranges when we left!!!!!!!
