Damp in ground floor bedroom

We have a 2 bed ground floor apartment and about 5 months ago a bit of mould occured on the outside wall, about 12 inches above floor level, it then started spreading along the length of the wall and around the corner onto a non exterior wall. Cleaned it all off with bleach but it left some bubbly paint work, which had now expanded, although no more mould. When it rains the external wall gets very wet and with heavy rain water building up on the patio. I’m thinking that over time water has got into the wall and is now coming into the brickwork. We have only lived here since February and evidence of damp didn’t start appearing until July. I really need an expert to establish the cause, find a solution and give me a quote. I have bought a dehumidifier that has been collecting about 2 litres of water a day which seems a huge amount for a small bedroom.  Maybe I should get some heat in there in the meantime?

Any advice would be helpful until I can get a permanent resolve.

Thank you

Roz

Hi Roz, you mention there is rain falling on the patio, which in turn is adjacent to the wall that is becoming saturated. Are there skirting tiles (say 4-6” hi) around the perimeter of the patio, or can the rain settling on the horizontal patio tiles just seep into the wall? If no skirting tiles, this might be your 1st step to remedying the problem 🤔.

Regards Tony

Thanks for that but the bottom half of the wall is tiled and a tiled skirting, so not too sure how it can come through the bricks to the bedroom.  I have now scraped off all the affected parts of the stipples paintwork which looks quite thick so assume it’s polyurathane.  I’m keeping the windows open on dry days, like today, and from early evening as it gets colder I am putting some heating in the room to hopefully dry out the damp. This may or may not help with the internal damp problem I have now but what I am also looking to do is avoid it happening again because otherwise ill just be casing my tail to keep on top of the problem.

The top half of the outside of the wall is not tiled which maybe where the water ingresse. The only thing with this is that we had virtually no rain from April to October but the evidence of damp on this bedroom wall happened through the hottest time of year. I don’t get any condensation problems in the house or any evidence of it on the windows but I’m not sure if condensation could form on the outside walls and then just work it’s way through the brickwork to the inside.

I’m not sure what type of tradesman I need to help me find a resolution.
