If you read more deeply, you may see that the regional government are hell-bent on opening this ego-massager, yet AENA who run virtually all Spanish airports are very happy to continue using San Javier, which makes profits, has low operating costs and established routes and is only at around 70% capacity. Apparently the Air Force are quite content for the mix of military and civil flying. The Aeropuerto Elefanté Blanco would be privately run, and would have to persuade airlines to use it, without subsidising flights as of course this would be illegal...

If it ever happens, how long it would continue is anyone's guess.

Lunacy, IMHO.

I've been following the Corvera incident closely since first deciding to look at Murcia. Being close to an airport will be important to me as I don't drive. On a visit to the area I spoke to an estate agent who told me he'd seen the airport, that it was completed and all ready to go.

I note that the tender to run the airport is said to be going out this month....

Cabs are easy to get from both Murcia and I assume Corvera as and when it opens. As far as I can tell it will not open in 2018 and there are still demo's taking place to keep the Murcia airport open but you are correct that by and large the Corvera airport is complete

The tender continues to run and what with the political issues still on-going I am not convinced that I see a quick solution in sight but at a trade fair held at the end of last year in London the Corvera representatives apparently attended to try and persuade airlines to switch their flights to Corvera when it is open and to increase the flights (Murcia has lost a lot of passengers but this is simply down to the lack of flights compared to Alicante)

AIRPORT ANTICS

Latest news...... Corvera and Murcia-San Javier set to fight for business

By Nuria Pérez

MURCIA is to have two airports operating in competition, with a distance of just 37km by road separating one from the other.

The regional government is pressing ahead with its plan to open Corvera at all costs – and national airport authority AENA is refusing to shut down profit-making Murcia-San Javier.

Hi all

My wife and I are currently searching for a holiday home in Los Alcázares. We love the area and particularly the proximity to the airport as I hate driving when I'm away. My question is that I keep reading about San Javier being closed and Corvera taking all the flights. Does anyone know what is...

... actually happening, as I can't seem to find any concrete information either way!

Many thanks

David

As I understand it , initially the thinking was san Javier would close and Corvera would open up

Seems as though the company that own Alicante also own San Javier and do not want to lose the business and at the moment both san Javier and Corvera could be open at the same time

Passenger traffic appears to up at San Javier which is much closer to Murcia than Alicante and personally I think the numbers would increase even more if more airlines flew there but I guess due to the uncertainty they are waiting

They have, and do.

Southend on sea to Alicante ONLY      Or do you have ANY other GUARANTEES

Please be sure before you post.....causes confusion

If you look, the post was made in January 2017.....flights were listed at that time, but time has moved on. Who knows what will happen when Corvera takes over.

Corvera confirmed to be opened in January 2018 and they are looking to take up to 16 flights per hour but that is more of a long term target (within 25 years). Currently my understanding is that there are 4 airlines talking of starting flights to Corvera from January but who they are and the frequency to be confirmed

All things being equal this should bring a boost and benefit to Camposol and already heard of a golf course close to Corvera re-opening a hotel in anticipation of Corvera opening (so potentially this may also happen to the hotel on sector C)

I will probably fly to Alicante if San Javier closes. My property is a stones throw from San Javier airport. I bought the property last year. I've known about Corvera for many years though, but never thought it would actually open. It still might not take off (pardon the pun). Who knows for sure. I'm not using it anyway!

Corvera has been built for about 7 years but never opened due to financial issues and the authorities continued with Murcia through the whole period which makes sense

do not know the reason behind the intention to open Corvera but to be fair there are so few flights thru Murcia it makes sense to utilise a bigger airport if it is there. in theory it should only bring more tourists to the Murcia region, help to re-galvanise the economy and ultimately help property values

cabs from Alicante take me around 90 minutes, from Murcia about 45 minutes and I am told that from Corvera it will be cut down to 20 minutes so personally cannot wait for Corvera to open
