I think our electric water heater is getting clogged with limescale (“cal”).

Weighing up whether to replace it or getting it descaled, has anyone had theirs done, and rough cost please?

Our 50 litre water heater had been making a bit of a noise for a while & I suspected it was limescale causing the noise.

It was 7 years old.

Decided to replace it with a 100 litre one.

Cost at Leroy Merlin was 209 euro ( fitting on top of that ).

When we took the old one out I turned it upside down & removed the heating element to have a look at it.

The hole to withdraw the element was about 9 inches in diameter & I could not withdraw it.

I managed to get the element loose & looked into the water heater at the element with a torch.

The element was absolutely massive like a piece of sea coral, absolutely unbelievable !!

At that sort of price for a new more efficient water heater it's probably not worth the cost of trying to descale your water heater.

Lots of electric heaters on view at Leroy Merlin's.

Thanks Roland - when we moved here in 2017 I replaced the existing termo which was full of cal with a modern Eco one. I know that their advice is to descale every 2 years but failed to do it, and am now getting a bit ancient to be lifting one off & on the wall. Hence my question - has anyone had theirs cleaned, by whom and what cost. I may well replace it but a new one should be done in a couple of years time.

Mine seems to be taking longer to heat the water, dont now if it's because its colder in winter, and much warmer in summer?

I replaced the element in mine when it failed, fairly easy job can't remember the cost but fairly trivial, 20 or 30 euros from local ferreteria, from experience the heater itself just needed flushing out and element replacing
