Very helpful member
Hi rabamc
OK English is not my first language, but I can try to answer your question:
a) I would like some local information about the area.
Los Nietos is an old fishing village. Once upon a time it was the “Holiday destination” of the mine workers from La Union. It has the starting/ending train station to Cartagena. It’s a train ride of ca. 40 Min. and a round trip Ticket costs you € 2,30. (By car to Cartagena Port is 30 KM and takes 30 Minutes plus parking fee)
I would say it’s 2 parts: old “town” (more small village)with typical Spanish flair and the new part with lots of housing (holiday houses/apartments). You have to see and feel it. Near by is the “Holiday villages” of Mar de Cristal to the south and Los Urrutias to the north.
b) I’ve heard that water quality is not very good
1) Due to the extensive farming area around the Mar Menor (It’s the biggest Lagune in Europe) the nitrates from the artificial fertilizer of the fields goes nearly un-filtered into the water when we have HEAVY RAIN (last time September 2018). The authorities working on it. There is a ban now of 1,5 KM to use fertilizer to the water.
2) You can drink the water from the tap. OK it tastes different to your water at home. Solution: Use Britta filter.
c) Advise on Lawyers to use
What for? Buying a property? I recommend using a “Gestor” who speaks your language to translate the Spanish “gigglegobble” to your language. And also, to transfer all the bills (electric & water…..) form A to you. (The paperwork is a nightmare)
d) We like quiet –
from end of the summer holidays (September) to Easter it is dead (The restaurants are closed) you have to drive……………
Los Nientos is quiet. For shopping you have to drive….i.e.
Los Belones (8 KM)> OK-ish
Los Urrutias (8KM)> OK-ish
Mar de Cristall> only in the summer (Easter to September)
Cartagena (20KM)> excellent
Los Alcazares (15KM)> excellent
If you have more “inside” questions just ask
