EU BORDER LOCKDOWN EXTENDED TO 28th Feb.
A new Spanish BOE (Official State Gazette) INT/62/2021 has now extended the EU border closure to non-EU countries for another month until the end of February. On or before that date the restrictions will be lifted or extended again.
CHANGES.
The 4 changes are based on the EU meeting on the 28th Jan and the recommendations of the Official Journal of the European Union (DOUE).
1) TRAVEL BAN EXTENSION
The ban of all non-essential travel from non-EU countries now runs until midnight 28th Feb 2021.
2) SAFE COUNTRY LIST REDUCED TO SEVEN
Japan has also been added to the High Risk country list and is now banned from non-essential travel into the EU.
The only 7 non-EU countries that now remain on the Safe List are:
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Rwanda
- Singapore
- South Korea
- Thailand
- China
3) Gibraltar Border now Closed.
Despite Gibraltar joining the Schengen area, only legal residents of the territory of Gibraltar, (whatever their nationality) can enter Spain provided that there is reciprocity of entry into Gibraltar of residents of the Campo de Gibraltar region.
4) Exceptions to the ban have been reduced.
There only exceptions to this ban are if people need to travel for essential reasons, such as frontline workers, however only people who have documented reasons of force majeure or need, or whose entry is allowed for humanitarian reasons will be accepted under this rule.
WHEN CAN I TRAVEL?
If you are not a Spanish resident, it will not be possible to travel into the EU before March, and this will quite probably be extended.
