Thanks Pauline I think this is probably a strategy that we might follow however would state that second hand cars seem to have a relatively high cost in Spain and don't think you can buy a runabout for under €1,000 plus maybe some extras.

what do you think you will do with the car when you're not in Spain

I think it's a concoction of the aftermath of Gota Fria and maybe because they know EasyJet have just released flights so prices might be up to catch the unwary.  We've just paid €80 for 4 days hire next May.  Like Peter C says it's still reasonable but it's certainly much higher than we paid for car hire in 2018 & 2019.  That was with CarJet but same as DoYouSpain as well.  Top tip though, buy an excess insurance cover from the UK for peanuts before you go.  Annual European cover is about £50.  Same price as Carjet price for a week.

Fredtru, we came with our own car (Santander ferry) in March to test the drive for bringing a van over, which we did this time. We,re in process of moving our belongings(but we have a lot so more trips on the cards). We park in our own garage and return by van. My hubby didnt want to drive around for 3mnths in a 23ft van given the narrow village streets, so the car was a must. However if necessary we would park at an airport longstay parking and think 250/300€ is not bad price to pay for the yr. We would try bargaining the price as it would be there only 6mnths of yr and only brought to us twice in a yr. Thats a long way off though as the van will be used many more times yet. The Itv was a doddle(booked appointment on their website) and went to Suma to register the tax payment for next yr. It was best thing we,ve done and we,ve got our yearly international driving permit ready for after Brexit. You wont regret it as the anxiety we had driving a hire car was unbearable having been scammed twice for extra charges on return even though we used "carhire4you" insurance which paid us out twice without any problem. Its a 19yr old Seat ibiza but going fine, thats all that matters. We used liberty seguros insurance, done by phone 302€ fully comp and we,re both over 70, hubby 76yrs so insurance high. We are 70kms from airport and returning car every 30 days was also a considerred nuisance(could not get a company to let us have a car for 90 straight days either.

Hope it helps you consider, especially if you,re hiring in the longterm.

Regards

Pauline.

Hi Pauline thanks for your reply. I think we will look out for a used car and park it at the airport. I had the same problem before of not being allowed to rent for more than 30 days at a time. Hiring can be stressful and easy to get ripped off. It’s just difficult to get an older car at the same price. We go over this weekend and will have a look. Sean

Hi Sean perhaps you can drop us all alone when you get back let us know how you made out with the car hire or purchase which ever you decide to pursue you one thing I wondered and maybe somebody over there has to follow this up does it make any difference booking from a Spanish IP address I don't suppose it's distinguishes between Spanish and UK sources but might be interesting to try thank you very much David

Ok David I will let you know how we get on. We hired our car a while ago for our trip from our hotmail address and no problem. The price was good and have used Centauro several times and it has worked well. We buy our own insurance from iCarhireinsurance. Though I would still like to buy a car if I can get one at the right price. Dean
