I work in the energy industry in the UK, so hope I can help...
Electricity is generally a bit more expensive in Spain than the UK and gas is not common - which means when you do need heat in the winter, it's also more expensive - hence the prevalence of log burners. Pool pumps need to run pretty much constantly and heating a pool is expensive - although many people don't bother in the summer sun.
Iberdrola are sometimes unpopular, but only in the same way as people in the UK don't like British Gas. You can get your bills in English and use their website in English. They also have a tariff where you can choose a certain number of hours per week at the cheaper rate, which may or may not help! They also offer lots of cheap insurances for your home electrics, appliances, etc.
The other thing to consider, if you have the money and are looking at living there for a long time, are solar panels. You don't get the same 'feed in tariff' as we do in the UK, but I think there are some incentives and in general, the payback in reduced bills is 5-6 years for the initial outlay and then considerable savings from then on. Many properties already have 'solar therm' which uses solar panels to heat your hot water intially, before an electric water heater does the rest.
Hope this helps!
