Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to retire to Spain within the next 6 months, the one thing that I can't seem to fathom out is how do I take my dog, do I send him by air, I don't drive but I'm hoping if I pay a friend he could drive us both, has anyone any suggestions as I do not drive myself.

To fly dog over is expensive and only certain airports take animals.

It cost me on top for pet passport for my cat £150

I used Brittany Ferries they have pet friendly cabins but you have to book way in advance ring them when you think you have a date in mind. I joined their club for 2 years but you have to do at least 3 trips to re coop your fees you can go via France but just as expensive as going from Portsmouth to Bilbao or Santander or from Plymouth.

I would also recommend downloading “Here maps” once downloaded you turn off as it uses offline. I put Spain and just England on mine and brilliant as it is offline unlike others or sat navs.

Hope this is of some use

Linda

Have seen a couple of online adverts from individual private people who will drive you and your dog from uk to Spain, I think in a small properly fitted out car/van. They stop when you need to rest or you dog needs a wee walk and does overnight stays. It was not a commercial “ white van man” transport anything type set up. Sorry I can’t remember the web site name tho, just try google ing- something like “ private transport with dog to Spain” ? It is true if you need a dog cabin ( so dog can be with you all the time in cabin) on the 25 hour ferry from UK to Bilbao or Santander you need to book about 12 months in advance. (There are only 17 dog cabins on Cap Finistere but they have outdoor/ on top deck kennels if your dog is happy to be away from you)

Good luck

Jaz

Back again, have just done search- pet & owner transport to Spain.

Try looking at www.petchauffereurope.co.uk

www.cfourpaws.co.uk

www.pets2go2.co.uk

There are a few more to look at but hope it may help you.

I paid someone to drive me & my dog over. It cost me £1000. We came via the tunnel & drove across France & stayed overnight at Barcelona. I would never put my dog on a plane too many horror stories. If you have a friend who could drive you I would suggest you do that. The ferries are also not ideal on some routes. One chauffeur company I enquired with charges £2700 plus Spanish tax. A lot of companies transport multiple dogs stacked in cages in vans for a reasonable fee but I did not want this for my dog.

As well as dog friendly cabins on Brittany ferries, there are kennels-not the height of luxury but you can (I think) have 24 hr access to your dog and take him/her onto the walkies area on deck.It was about £40 per dog one way. You need to take bedding that could be thrown away after use. There are many people who do pet transport. 5 yrs ago our rescue Mastine x came from Murcia to Notts for £350 AND she had a pet friendly cabin(. Sadly this man has died ). Good luck.

If you don't drive I think you might have difficulties on Camposol. There is no public transport here and its also a long way to the Port and the beaches. Should you need to go to the hospital for any reason its about a 40 minute drive.

If you want a quiet typical Spanish village a few mins walk to the beaches look at Isla Plana. It's 20 mins from Camposol, a healthy ex pat mix with other nationalities- Swedish, German, French Dutch and of course Spaniards.

It has a bank, chemist ( very knowledgeable English speakers) very good vets, small well stocked supermarket, bakers, fresh fish shop, fruit & veg shop & wonderful hardware shop selling anything household/ diy. Also an "all sorts shop" sells shoes, clothes, cleaning household stuff, papers magazines, suitcases etc etc.(The village estate agent is called Casas del Mar, with a web site) There are 3 restaurants and a couple of bars/ coffee shops. It is also on a bus route to Puerto Mazarron with its long promenade, marina and main shopping centre and many bar/restaurants.

It's a very relaxing place to be.

Good luck in your search, jaz

I would not contemplate moving to this part of Spain if I could not drive. You might be better in a city environment where you could walk everywhere, Cartagena could be good. I would recommend getting a driving licence before you leave the UK.
