We are planning to move from the UK  to Spain , bringing our pet African Grey Parrot with us.

I was wondering if anyone has done this, and the means of transport used. Any information or advice would be appreciated.

Hi, I think if I were taking a parrot I would go by car, Portsmouth to Bilbao is 24 hours then Bilbao down to Camposol. Not sure how long the second half takes but I did Bilbao to Alicante none stop and it took 11 hours at night.

I brought a pair of  blue and gold macaws over to Spain for a customer some years ago. I did Brit Ferries but I can't remember whether it was Portsmouth/Bilbao or St Malo.

The bird must be inspected by an authorised Vet 24 hrs prior to embarkation and he will provide you with an export certificate. Give plenty of notice to the Vet.

Travelling down was easy just the cover over the cage at dusk. Tried to teach them; hola buenas dias, but they didn't respond!

Your best bet is to phone DEFRA for up to date procedures then phone Brit Ferries for their advice, everyone is very helpful but possibly not so clear cut at the moment cos of the corona virus.

Hope all goes well

Thanks for that Colin, we normally sail Plymouth to Santander with our dog, as we live in Cornwall. Brittany ferries information only seems to cover, dogs, cats and Ferrets ? but i will try and get in touch with them to check.

The Brit Ferries staff didn't know how to handle it and I travelled with the parrots with no charge for them!
