Hi

im trying to help my In laws, there Bank account with Santander in Mazzaron has been frozen and they are unable to get out to Spain since Covid.

Would anyone have an email conact for the branch and why it would be frozen?

Money has regulary been transferred to pay the bills and always in credit but last deposit was returned. They have not recieved any notification why the account is blocked.

We are looking to come out to Spain to see if we can sort it but need to find out if possible and what paperwork is needed.  They have up to date passports and NIE number.

Many thanks

If you Google Banco Santander, you should be able to find the Customer Service email address and phone number. They should have someone who speaks English if you ask and just keep saying "English" until they should pass you on to someone who speaks English and could help you. It could be because the account has an embargo on it. Maybe a tax demand or a bill that has been returned unpaid. It could also be that the bank just needs a real person to come in and prove their existence, which they do from time to time, if they have never seen the account holder.

Perhaps her passport has expired.

It happened to me once.

Unless you have a power of attorney the bank will not speak to you only to your in-laws.

Spanish banks ( I think it is every 2 years) will need a copy of your passport and NIE and in some cases, proof of income in the UK. The reason being that banks need to “know their customers” in a bid to prevent money laundering.  If this hasn’t been done for a number of years I reckon this is the reason the account has been frozen.  Unless you have power of attorney you will not be able to deal with the bank.

Might be worth looking at a Wise.co euro account & move all the DD to that account.

Probably save a small fortune in Spanish bank account charges as well.
