I bought a new car in May 2023 & part exchanged my old car with the dealer.

I paid the old car tax by DD every year.

Do I need to cancel the old car tax DD & set up a new one or will the tax office just use the DD details for the new car.

TIA

The tax office cannot use the same Direct Debit details on their files as these details pertain to the vehicle that you no longer own (if transferred correctly by the dealer) Firstly, I would check that the ownership of this vehicle has been transferred to the dealer, as it's not uncommon to discover that it's still in your name until the car is sold on to another person! You can check this online on the DGT website and after January 1st 2024, or maybe even now, the car that you bought this year should be showing as your property on that website too. You can take the receipt for the 2023 payment on the old car to your local Agencia Tributaria office and cancel that payment and then make a new one for the new car. You'll need to take the car documents with you, as well as your ID, plus a document from your bank showing your name and address proving you as the account holder of the account that you want to use for the direct debit. You may also be able to do all this online if you have a digital signature or a Cl@ve.
