Hello everyone I'm new to the group please be gentle :)

We are driving down in May just wondering how many of you have done this and which routes you have found the best. I'm thinking going Plymouth to Santander, after that I havn't got a clue lol it will be down to the sat nav.

Live in Kent at moment but coming out permanently renting first to make sure we like it. I will drive my uk reg van and sell it after we get there.

Thanks :)

why are you going from Plymouth when you live in Kent. You can sail to Bilbao or Santander from Portsmouth. Brittany ferries sail two or three times a week,it takes on average 26 hours but be warned the Sunday sailing takes about 30 hours because they stop at roscoff for a change of staff.we came over about a year ago and took the Tuesday evening boat to Santander,it cost around £450 including cabin and car.you can Google Brittany ferries and view the trip.as for getting to camposol it is about 580 miles,it's an easy trip.there are plenty of 24 hour devices on route that sell everything.if you put 30875 Murcia in your sat nav it will bring you here.there is one toll road about three euros and on this road you will find a repsol garage with a carafour that sell everything 24/7.you will also probably see lots of British cars on your way too.the only warning is do not stop in Madrid to fill up lots of fake police, the rest of the journey is safe well lit roads. Safe journey

Thanks mate great info, just what I was looking for.

Only reason I was thinking of taking the Plymouth sailing was the shorter sailing time, but I suppose there's not much in it after adding on the extra driving time.

What extra equipment do I need to carry in the van? I have read Hi vis vests, first aid kit and warning triangle, is there anything else required? Cheers

we came down last november took Brittany ferry from portsmouth to santander drove to Madrid stayeed for one night then on to Torrevieja which we used as a base but now are settled in Campasol. The whole trip was brilliant.Make sure you comply with all spanish regs foe your car, there is plenty of information online.Once down here there are plenty of British mechanics who can get you Spanish plates.

Why not go from Portsmouth to Bilbao, I know it isn’t far but Burgos is beautiful and so alive, I stay in a hotel there which is only 100 metres from the cathedral and because you park under the square it is a few euros cheaper when you go to pay. That is if you were going slowly through Spain otherwise get to the other side of Madrid if you can. I use Booking.com but there are loads of sites. I have been going back and forth for the last two years and love the journey if you poodle along.

Hope it is of some use
