The main issue that people report is that they book a car at a low rental rate and then receive a high pressure sell to buy the company's additional insurance, which often costs more than the rental. This can include scare tactics around charges for repairing damage, etc. There are then incidents where people have had charges applied for non-existent damage, damage that was already there when the car was first collected, etc. Other issues to avoid include checking if there is a mileage limit - which can easily be exceeded and cost a lot in additional charges; and fees to refuel the car. The alternative is to pay a lot more to hire the car from one of the better companies (Hertz, Avis, etc.), however, their prices will be a lot higher!

I would recommend Centauro - used them several times with no problems.

Definitely stay away from Goldcar / Interrent - many people report bad experiences and they scored lowest in recent Daily Telegraph / Which? magazine surveys & investigations.

Personally, I had an annual insurance policy with 'icarhire' which insured any excess payments for around £60 per year. If you did have any damage, then you would still need to pay the car rental company, but you could then claim that back from 'icarhire'.

I always rent with 'unlimited mileage' and 'full to full' fuel - so that avoids mileage issues and I just need to remember to return the car full of fuel.

I also inspect the car carefully on collection and often take photos of all panels; and then do the same on return (and also take a photo of the mileage). This does feel like a pain and is slightly time-consuming, but worth it to minimise the risk of being accused of damage, etc. When returning the car, always get a copy of the car return form, signed by the agent, so you have more evidence that there is nil damage.

Hope this helps!

Lara cars are good, also coys are worth checking, I find Lara a little cheaper, they both do a fair all Inc price, so no deposit.

Been using Goldcar for years. Never a problem. Take out proper insurance and you won't have to worry about taking photos, checking for scratches etc. Always found them efficient and hassle free. Trying to cut corners - and price - leads to grief. As in most aspects of life, you get what you pay for.

We use Centauro but always pay full price for peace of mind they only check fuel gauge when returned.
