Hi my wife and I will be moving to Spain for our retirement, we are initially driving over bringing some things in the car with us, we are wondering what to do with our car because British insurance will only cover for 90 days, we have just had the car serviced and a new MOT ready for coming over, it's a very good car with low mileage but obviously RHD, we don't know what to do, try and find a Brit who is coming back to the UK and may have a Spanish car to do a deal with, or get the car registered on Spanish plates, or bring it back to UK and sell it then fly back and buy a Spanish car, can anyone offer advice please? we will be heading for Southern Costa Blanca or Murcia if that makes any difference.

If it's a good reliable low mileage car put it on Spanish plates.

Might only cost a few hundred euros to do.

Ask Debbie Shaw on Camposol for further info as she deals with things like this as well as translations.

Drop her an email [email protected].

You might find it difficult using a RHD car but see how you go on first before making a decision ???

You can insure your UK reg card in Spain. It shows up on the DVLA system.

But you can only legally drive the car in Spain for 6 months.

As soon as you see the extremely high Price's of second hand car's ( at least 4 x what you would pay for one in the UK ) with a million miles on the clock  ..it would be wise for you to get your car replated to Spanish plates... the majority of your driving will be around Camposol anyway.

Thanks for the advise, If we buy a LHD car in the UK because we won't have had it for 6 months would we get hit with tax on it?

Yes you will have to pay import duty & that could be 800 + euros depending on the value of the car.

I got caught out by this a few years ago.

You would need to find out the up to datedrules & regulations.

Probably Google might be helpful
