So, I am in the UK and a UK resident. Want to buy a property in Camposol with no need for a mortgage. Aged 55 and working with a global pharma company earning £50k+. No debts, kids grown up. Just need a new base to live and would want to spend all my time at Camposol performing remote work. My company has a site in Spain however I am currently assigned to the site in the UK - however, transfering to the spanish site would not be a major issue.

Brexit - how likely is it to get perm residency in Spain based on the above paragragh? I have no intention of retiring etc for at least another 15 years (assuning I make it that far). Will the process of getting perm residency be straight forward etc? Or do I move to Costa Rica?

Many thanks, Richard.

Suggest you look at the above links - you will need one of the working visas, but that shouldn't cause you a problem.

Once you get a visa, you apply for a TIE, and then (6 months to a year later) you become tax-Resident in Spain.

With your income you will pay more tax in Spain than in the UK. You might hit the 45% marginal tax rate. Personal allowances are lower in Spain than in the UK, so the tax impacts at both ends.

If you live outside the EU, you will need a "Non-Lucrative Visa" which entitles you to live in Spain but not work.  There are a number of criteria you must meet, financial will be proof of ability to support yourself - at the moment, 28,800 Euros as an individual in either savings, passive income (e.g., pension, investment income etc) or a combination of both.  A couple will need to show 36,000 euros.  This is likely to go up slightly soon as Spain reviews iPrem figures annually.  Whe you renew your visa at the end of the first year, it will be for 2 years duration so you will need to show double those figures.

In brief, what else you need - copied from the internet.

In order to be eligible for the Non-Lucrative Visa for Spain, applicants should:

  • Have the economic means to financially provide for themselves in Spain (as above)
  • Not have a criminal record within the last 5 years (UK = ACRO criminal record check)
  • Have access to public healthcare or private health insurance that provides the equivalent with an insurer authorised to run in Spain (or if from UK and of retirement age, there is a thing you can use called an S1 which removes the need for private health)
  • Not have entered or stayed illegally in Spain
  • Be the spouse or unmarried partner of someone granted a Non-Lucrative Visa
  • Be the child or dependant relative in the ascending line who form part of the family unit of someone granted a Non-Lucrative Visa
  • Not have been refused entry into any of the Schengen countries
  • Have a place to live in Spain that is either owned or rented
  • Possess a residence permit from a third country (not a member of the EU) such as the UK, United States or Canada
  • Have paid all associated visa fees (£525.30 currently)
There are people to help you through the process, one company I am using is called Upsticks at https://upsticks.es/ - Chris Goodacre and his team will help you through the process in the UK and the 2nd part in Spain.
