Hi All

My Husband (67) and myself (51) are moving out from the UK after the year.  What is the best healthcare package to take.  Some of the quotes we have received so far are for more than my Husbands monthly pension. How do we get good cover without getting ripped off.  I feel some Companies put in the word Expats and charge you a premium for it.

TIA

Susan

You need to take out health care insurance which complies with the rules for your visa. Basically, this means no co-payments (the Spanish term for excesses) and the policies need to be paid for up front (i.e. not on a monthly direct debit). Many companies offer these policies and will state that they are visa compliant.

Quotes vary greatly, but will broadly vary depending on your ages and any pre-existing health conditions, or previous operations, etc. just as they do in the UK - so it's worth shopping around.

I use Sanitas (which is part of the BUPA group) and pay approx. €800 per annum (including dental cover). I'm 53 and have no pre-existing medical conditions. I've also seen DKV recommended by others on this forum.

I'm not sure, but I think that if your husband is already taking his state pension in the UK, he can apply for a form S1, which will provide free healthcare in Spain and can be used for visas, so you should check that. Obviously, you would still need a health insurance policy for yourself.

Hope this helps!

Yes, Hubby will be able to get S1 healthcare and I can piggyback on that. Thank you for your response.

A potentially useful video and contact for you which explains the S1 application process in the UK and then the rest of the process in Spain.

Rather than saying that premiums quoted are a rip off, try seeing what private health insurance would cost for you in the UK? I doubt it would be very different to any in Spain.

If you read my post properly, it said that private quotes that mentioned “expats” are a rip off as they seem to be over inflated. This is based solely on the information I have received so far.

I know what private healthcare in the UK costs, I’ve just had an op!

Try Tailor Made Healthcare. English speaking/owned business. I had a good experience.

Hi, if you are only there intermittedly will the yearly travel insurance cover you too?

Yes, my Husband will be able to claim on the S1 and as his spouse I can piggyback on his claim as well.

Thank you to everyone who responded.
