Hi, I’ve just taxed ours so can help you that but not had to have ITV yet. Car tax year in Spain is from January to December for all cars. Whoever owned the car in January this year will have (should have) paid it. We purchased our car last October so tax was due this January. Unfortunately the tax bill does not get sent out until late February, March or even April & May in some areas. Ours came after we’d left to go back to UK. When we got back here we tried to pay the tax at the selection of banks you can use but because was now later than the March date on the form, which they call the final day of the voluntary payment period, we couldn’t do it. We had to go to the office in Cartagena in person to get a new bill issued with a late payment fine, called a recargo which is 5% on top within first month then rises to 20% plus interest, also if you don’t pay, your vehicle could be impounded if stopped by the police. The bill was just over €61 but with fine it came to €67 so not bad at all for another year! I took my bank details and set up a direct debit ready for next year so shouldn’t be a problem. They only speak Spanish, but the bill really does the talking for you if you can’t speak any, you can pay by credit or debit card. For me the OAGRC office was in Cartagena, no appointment necessary, just join the queue outside as only 1 in 1 out at the moment. The electronic notice on the door tells you what to do.

If you bought a car with no current ITV, then it cannot be driven at all until it is legally roadworthy. You should get a grua to take it to the nearest ITV station with the vehicle documents. Gruas are often included in your car insurance. Your IVTM (road tax) will be in the name of the person who was the registered owner on January 1st. as mentioned in the previous post.

Note that an ITV is not needed until the car is 4 years old.

Unfortunately because mine was overdue it wouldn’t let me pay online, a fine had to be added, so it was in person only.
