Maybe it is/was a stray locust !!!

Locusts are not unheard of in these climes but I thought that I saw a praying mantis a few weeks ago and now Rich T says that he also has them, I'm going to try the soapy water thing first, and if that is not successful, get some bug spray.

Praying mantis landed years ago in our terrace and gone away very quickly.  I honestly thought it runned away from someones terrarium or whatever it calls. Never seen them again and when Rich said they around that started making the sense. Those brown crickets or as I called the giant grasshopper is not often I see in my garden, (not the ones noisy black crickets) but when I see one,  lemon and now removed orange leaves would suffer so first remedy is to find the one as my trees only the small ones and chuck out into the lawn on the front were plenty of ants to deal with it...

Well I believe your big brown grasshopper is an Egyptian cricket. I’ve had some and they are very destructive like locusts and will eat pretty much everything. I don’t think the mantises are very harmful to plants. I’ve had some for a while now and had the fascinating experience of watching one build a round nest and then it’s tiny babies hatching out, which I videoed. I have uploaded here the Egyptian cricket for info.

You need to. I have two cats who bring everything indoors from lizards, mice, rats, insects, snakes etc. Back to the subject of insects on plants - yes. Spray them with washing up liquid water. Sorts out most of the species that like using one’s garden as a restaurant!!
