I think everyone has problems with Spanish banks, so can anyone advise me. We changed our account from a personal to business account. My wifi and phone was cut off yesterday. When I contacted my supplier they said my bill had not been paid for 3 months. I paid them over the phone and all is well. Anyway when I went to the bank this morning they said it was my fault as I had not changed my bank details with the WiFi company. They told me it was nothing to do with them but they managed to change all my other standing orders/direct debits. I have been charged €48 by my supplier for defaulting on my payments. The bank will not refund me but I think it is their fault. Please help. Sorry for the rant x

Why are you blaming the bank? The bank cannot make any changes to your account without receiving your instructions to do so. It's not really their fault that your new bank account didn't pay your direct debits from a previous account and surely in 3 months, you might have noticed that you hadn't paid any bills? That said, you'd think that either they or you would have thought ahead and ensured that the new account would take over all the fixed transactions from the other account!

I was told by my bank that they would transfer all the direct debits. They managed 4 out of 5. The reason I did not know is when they changed my account they changed my access password without telling me. Really efficient. They had my authority to change everything. That is why I am blaming my bank. I am really looking for help here not criticism

In uk we have a banking switch guarantee of 7 days and all direct debits are transferred.

This is not the case in Spain I’m afraid.

Although the Spanish bank does try to switch your direct debits, they don’t guarantee it. The onus is on you to ensure you check and where necessary inform your recipients of the changes.

It is difficult especially if you have been told they would do the switches.

I think the lesson is to always check your direct debits with the bank and ask for a print off then you can act swiftly to amend if necessary, by calling into your bank in question.

Fully understand your frustrations, but try to move on from it and don’t let it bother you, there is a lot worse out there.

Hope this helps

"The reason I did not know is when they changed my account they changed my access password without telling me."

And in all that time you didn't attempt to sign in to check everything was ok?

Regardless of what anyone says they will do the onus is on you to check all is in place and corret.

Thank you. You are totally correct but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.  I am over it x

If it was a DDR it would be your responsibility, as in the UK, to advise change of details, have you checked with your old provider that payments haven't been paid to them?

I  worked in banking for many years and, yes, banks make mistakes, but not all of the mistakes, often it is customer miscomprehension.

I would certainly recommend my bankers to you, that is ING, they are a Dutch on-line bank, working within Spanish banking rules, have an excellent web-site and professional telephone staff it you have a query. Also, they have an office in Murcia not far from El Corte Ingles if you ever needed to deal with someone face to face. I have had my accounts with them for several years now, and have been very impressed by their standards, and what I, as a former bank employee would consider old fashioned values of customer service.
