Was recently quoted £420 per month for cover for my wife and I from an international 'specialist' company. I'm 60, wife is about 59 I think! Our Saga UK cover is £215 per month. I'm sure that there'll be more realistic deals out there. We're not going to be in Spain for more than 5 months a year so we'll keep the Saga and utilise our travel insurance as we have a policy that allows up to 180 days overseas in a year. Good luck hunting out a decent deal. I'm sure that some members here will know what is the minimum cover needed for Brits in Spain and whether minimum is indeed recommended or to be avoided like the plague!

My missus and I are insured by ASSSA through Liberty Seguros in Los Alcazares. We pay around 1600 euros a year for the two of us. I'm 62 and the boss is 54. We have been with them for just over a year now and have never had anything declined, despite my missus having all sorts of things going wrong. In contrast - when we arrived here in 2016 and before we had the insurance set up , the missus stabbed herself in the leg with a kitchen knife - that episode cost us 420 euros. Previous to that, we lived in Dubai where our last year cost us 11,000 quid in med isnurance. We are long term expats and have been told that we can't claim any NHS until I am officially retired at 66 ( 67,68,69,70 ...... ) , but seeing as the Tories are already planning the demise of the NHS, I expect to get SFA. We are both very happy with the med insurance we have here.

Thanks Graeme for the information regarding the health insurance costs. Have one question - what level of cover do you have?
We are aware that insurance comes with different levels and different types eg hospital, dental, glasses, extras
Cheers

Hi you may find this of interest.
No entitlement to healthcare cover? If you are not entitled to healthcare cover from Spain or the UK, you might be able to join the Spanish government’s special pay-in health insurance scheme known as the Convenio Especial. This scheme provides access to the state healthcare system for a monthly payment of €60 per person under the age of 65 and €157 for those age 65+. It covers all pre-existing medical conditions but it does not cover prescriptions
In order to apply, you must have been registered at the local Town Hall on the ‘padrón’ (or Certificado de Empadronamiento) in Spain for at least 1 year and you must not be in receipt of any healthcare cover from the UK
I am not sure what the laws are n now as this article was 2015 but worth looking into.
Hope you enjoy Spain
