Oh yes, good to download Google maps on all the major cities/provinces onto tablet or phone.

I have driven a lot into Portugal and France and through Spain, never take the same route twice and ideally never more than 400km per day, ideally 200, using Booking.com for single nights, AirBnb for two nights or more.

Keep main bag in car and take back pack to accomodation, better than rushing to sit in Los Alcázares, as wonderful as it might be.

I have made this journey loads of times Burgos is fantastic I have stayed a number of times in a hotel close to the cathedral. Parking is underneath the main square and hotel normally has an extra discount. Burgos every thing is close to hand restaurants shops the works and history is all there.

Hotel Segovia I stay in a quirky hotel just off the main rd very Spanish but great clean comfortable and the6 have like a mini museum with reading room looks like turn of century.

I hope you enjoy your trip, I love the Bilbao to Portsmouth, food is excellent on board, if you have a pud you don’t just have to pick 1 last time I went discovered you could put more than one on your plate. But you can relax. For all avoid staying on deck 10 I don’t recommend it, yes 1st class but bloody noisy so not worth the cost.

Try the tulip hotel in zaragoza it's about half way and easy to park reasonably priced.

Looks an interesting place, but adds nearly two hours to driving time, plus more juice due to distance. ‘Er indoors would be complaining of baloon legs!

We stayed here last April (2018):

And thought it was wonderful.

Quirky, but Posada and village and area, are fascinating (IMHO)

Thanks all for your suggestions.....we have booked a hotel near Aranda de Duero, next to the highway so easy to find, and at around 5 and a half hours from home, so with a comfort stop or two we should be there around tea time. It is about 3 hours from the port. All I need now is to see where suitable pee and tea stops are!

I will give feedback on the experience on here, but our journey is not until August.

I believe there is a very nice river setting where you are stopping, I stopped there once. Sadly you are probably going round the right hand side of Madrid which means you won't be able to stop at Segovia or Toledo. Maybe next time you will choose to come the other side of Madrid. I have to say, I made the same choice on my first trip.

Safe journey
